Christmas is traditionally seen as one the most wonderful holiday seasons of the year — a time you really want to share with your loved ones — families, friends and lovers. But not everyone has the good fortune of having devoted and loving people to be around when Christmas is approaching. Many are desperately seeking companions to celebrate this joyful event. But on Saturday, around 200 single people grouped in Komunitas Jomblo (Singles Community), a community for the loving, happily celebrated Christmas at the Rock Church of the Worship Valley in Denpasar, the first ever Christmas gathering for single people held here in Bali.
Lukas Bundi, chairperson of Komunitas Jomblo, said the aim of the gathering was to observe the holy Christmas Day, while at the same time providing a forum in which young people aged at least 25 years had the rare chance to get together. “There are a lot of people who are unable to create relationships and communicate with other people. Lack of interaction and communication has led these people to remain single,” Bundi said. Some of them were too shy, choosy or maybe too introverted, he said. Komunitas Jomblo was eager to bridge this wide communication gap among single people.
“Komunitas Jomblo has numerous single members. We can share experiences with each other,” Bundi said. Komunitas Jomblo’s Christmas gathering was filled with special prayers, fun games, a standup dinner and other activities with the objective of forming connections with each of the interested parties. Dedi Kristian, an invitee, said that the Christmas gathering organized by Komunitas Jomblo was a memorable one. “As a single person, we really want to meet our soul mates, but we often feel too shy to express it. Meeting a real love and soul mate is a really big thing for a human being,” Kristian said.
Hanna Megawati, another guest, said that she was attracted to the gathering only to make more friends. “If we have a lot of friends, the chance to meet our dream lover might be greater, as well as widening our horizon,” Megawati said. Komunitas Jomblo’s event was not a matchmaking activity. “The meeting was enriched with religious and social messages, something that was important to our lives,” she added. The priest, Timotius Arifin Tedjasukmana, said that people should find life companions with the blessing of God. He said that being single did not mean that a person could not lead a fulfilling and meaningful life. “You can work to benefit your family, neighbors and the community where you live,” the priest said, adding that Christmas would always fill people with compassion for others.
