An official has criticized the South Sumatra administration, which, she said, was not serious about combating the rise in human trafficking in the province. The head of the administration’s women’s empowerment and child protection bureau, Roslina Siregar, said the increase in human smuggling cases to 30 in 2012 from 25 in 2011 had a lot to do with the absence of a strong commitment from the provincial administration to deal with the issue.
Executive director of the Woman Crisis Center (WCC) Yeni Rosliani said the provincial government should allocate funds in proportion to the issue’s magnitude so that all cases could be handled thoroughly. She said her center had found that most human-trafficking victims in the province were from West and Central Java and they worked as poorly-paid sex workers.
