0 Dutch plunder goes home to Jambi

Four cultural objects, originally taken from Jambi by Dutch colonizers, have been returned, to Jambi administration by Sriwijaya Historical Park in Palembang, South Sumatra. The items have been in storage at TPKS for many years and were returned to Jambi on Friday. A cultural object is an object made by humans for a practical or spiritual purpose.

The objects are an elephant statue, two padmasana (lotus throne) and a statue of a makara, a mythological Hindu sea-creature, usually shown as a chimera with the front part terrestrial (an elephant, crocodile or deer) and the back part aquatic, typically a fish tail. Head of Jambi’s cultural conservation department Darmawati Syar’i said that during the Dutch colonial era, Jambi was part of the South Sumatra residency with Palembang as its capital.

“Many cultural objects were taken to Palembang at that time and stored in museums in the residency,” said Darmawati. "Today, handover of the cultural objects takes place in Palembang," she said. (ebf)
