There is a reason behind President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s decision to nominate Finance Minister Agus Martowardojo as the new Bank Indonesia (BI) governor, a presidential spokesman said. "The President believes that Agus would be able to maintain and enhance relationships and cooperation’s between BI and other related institutions, such as the Financial Service Authority (OJK) and the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS)," Yudhoyono’s special staffer for economic affairs Firmanzah said in a statement on Saturday.
Agus already had good ties with international finance-related bodies, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund [IMF], he added. “Due to Indonesia's status as a G-20 member, it is important for the next BI governor to have the ability to initiate and maintain international cooperation’s, particularly given the economic crisis that is still hitting some parts of the globe,” Firmanzah, who was formerly the dean of the University of Indonesia’s (UI) School of Economics, said.
According to him, Yudhoyono was engrossed in talks with relevant parties, including Vice President Boediono and Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa before concluding to propose Agus to the House of Representatives to be approved as BI governor until 2018, replacing incumbent Darmin Nasution. “Agus has outstanding and extensive experience in the banking sector and at the same time pays intense attention to the real sectors,” Firmanzah said. Firmanzah also praised Agus’ performance during the latter’s tenure as the finance minister. “Our economy has progressed because Agus’ management,” he said. (dic)
