A massive fire gutted the traditional market at Pejarakan village, Buleleng, on Tuesday night. As many as 84 kiosks and seven buildings were razed to the ground, inflicting an estimated loss of Rp 10 billion (US$1 million). The community health service (Puskesmas) building next to the market also suffered major damage.
The fire started at around 8:30 p.m. “The fire engulfed a kiosk at the eastern part of the market before rapidly spreading to other parts,” a trader Gede Sujana said, adding that the traders and local residents had tried to put out the fire but to no avail. The fire destroyed everything in its path for almost four hours before being brought under control by firefighters using four fire trucks. Local resident Syaiful said that a textile trader, identified as Totok Sugiharto, passed away after witnessing the destruction of his kiosk. “Apparently he died of shock,” he said.
